February 27, 2010: An 8.8 Earthquake hit Chile around 3:34 AM this morning. This earthquake is approximately 700 times stronger than the Haiti earthquake which has killed approximately 260,000 people. The initial surge of the Asian Tsunami of 2004 (9.0-9.3 mag.) measured a height of approximately 108 feet and killed nearly 300,000 people. The earthquake in Chili and the tsunamis that may result have the potential to do the same, if not more.
The epicenter of this quake if off the coast of Maule just 45 miles south of Molina where Care helped build a hospital/clinic with the local community of 32,000. We currently have no word from them as to their damage and loss.
Care is prepared to collect supplies and funding at its headquarters at 1232 Nashville, TN 37115 in order to quickly assist as this disaster escalates.
